Identification of brood X CicadasThere are 3 species of the 17 year periodic Cicada in the Brood XAll three species are in the genus Magicicada . I have been able to identify males and females of the two commoner of the species: M. cassini cassini and M. septendecim . |
A female Magicicada septendecim . The upper picture shows the distinctive red spot between the eye and the wing base. The lower image shows the stripes on the abdomen and the position of the ovipositor. This is the largest of the three species. This picture shows the larger abdomen of a male Magicicda septendecim and the stripes on the lower portion of the abdomen. This male was singing and had is abdomen inflated. |
